Now I want to do something very complex, you see, and paste this screen grab in a document of mine. So I right-click on the image, and fortunately, there’s a Copy to clipboard option there. But if I point on other parts of the screen grab, there is another context menu, without Copy, but with totally obscure commands. Then what am I supposed to do? This friggin’ editor window is occupying the whole screen.
I can’t minimise it or toss it to the side. There’s no standard Windows buttons on the top right of the windows, because I suppose you’re smarter than everybody. So I try to close it by clicking on the huge red x. Now you’re asking me whether I want to save all changes or discard all changes in opened files. I don’t know. What opened files? I didn’t open any files.
Why are you interfering with my work? For the time being, I just want to paste the bloody screenshot in a bloody document to make sure I got it right, and make sure you put the bloody border around it. So I click either of the two buttons, Yes or No, and I don’t see any difference in what happens next.
Then finally, I can paste the screenshot in my document, and I order to reproduce these steps and write about them, I have had to redo them from the start for each single step, because the editor window doesn’t stay up there, like a standard Windows window.
You can’t leave it in the background, and come back to it later. It just goes away. Absolutely terrible interface and workflow. Window 7 Snipping Tool is way better than this, for Chrissake. It does all of the above in a completely intuitive way. Why can’t you build upon your ancestors, and do something better, instead of destroying everything they did, and build up an unusable monster because “features” and “power”?
What power? There’s no power in it if it’s unusable. Clairvaux, I completely disagree. Have been using this one for a long time and I find the interface to be very natural. I can’t stand the windows snipping tool in which you have to capture the exact region precisely with no option to correct.
I may have spent 5 minutes to figure it out the first time I used it, but immediately liked it and I use it every day without giving it a second thought. But what it does, it does beautifully. That’s what great software should aim to : do things right.
Most of the time, the Snipping Tool is enough. Now if you want to do more it’s difficult to do as little , there’s no lack of well thought-out software and mostly free. Want to be able to crop your screenshot after the fact? Pic Pick, Greenshot and scores of others can do that, with considerably swifter, faster, smarter and more intuitive workflows. Dear [ GOTD ] fellows. Ashampoo software does what it promises Peter Blaise, Let me be very clear : I actually believe that the quality of German software is one of the best-kept secrets of computerdom.
Ashampoo, as far as I can see, is an exception. Capture vs Capture screen vs video I consider screen capture the last possible choice and video capture the best choice that being said it is hard to find top tire video capture because the video’s are protected and always changing to make video capture nonfunctional.
Screen capture very hard to defend against and there are many free offerings. The biggest problem is buffering and the inability to do anything with your computer while doing screen capture lastly quality and video size I have never seen a screen capture equal to the actual video size this might not be true for more resent programs and seen them much larger than they should be P. I found the description unclear if this is a video capture and not a screen capture I would give it a try.
Screen capture, which is what Snap does, saves whatever’s displayed on screen, and since it’s the last stage in the process of playing video, it’s the lowest — but often still quite good — quality. To say mileage varies is an understatement. Using a 2nd, conventional hard drive as the target to write the new video file, and with an i7 , I have successfully used Snap, set to use the x VFW codec, to record p video playing in a web browser.
You are correct about not being able to use the PC for anything else while I was recording. It captures anything on or through the screen, including movement, video, and sound.
You tell us how it works for you. Peter Blaise, request denied I have tried 23 Screen capture’s in the past and found little to no difference in them I only desire video capture. I’ve just downloaded and installed Ashampoo Snap 9. It’s quickly and easily installed and it’s as advertised.
It can capture screen shots in a variety of ways. A very useful program. ScreenPresso Free can do just the same, and more, and it is Free ;-. It has a unique “optimized touch” feature , just make sure it’s selected during your installation. Yeah, right. ShareX is free, newer, and arguably does more. There are others, too, like LightShot. The funniest thing about all of this?
No wonder this one is free. Poor marketing on ashampoo’s part. I have almost totally given up on GOTD being relevant ever again. Teller Ugis, Thanks for the tip. Hadn’t heard of this before. Teller Ugis, I have Ashampoo Snap and am extremely happy with it and it’s features. How about trying software first before slamming it! Yes, I am expecting down votes for slamming Mr. Popular here so have at me. Teller Ugis, I have been using Snap for a few years now and super happy with it.
Maybe it’s just a matter of personal preference. I think there is no need to be so negative. It’s not uncommon to offer there the previous version and to state an unreasonable price, I agree on that point, but I doubt that anyone installs because of the price – people just want to try out the product. If not, it most certainly doesn’t do more. I think, however, you may be right about simple Screenshots. People think I was being negative above, but in reality, GOTD used to giveaway cutting edge software.
Now it seems to be a clearinghouse for people who have new software they promote by giving away their old version. Meanwhile, most of the programs are poor versions of software available for free elsewhere.
For those who assume I don’t try software. Think again. I just don’t care for bottom of the barrel stuff, free or not, when there are free but cutting edge alternatives. All rights reserved. You may change that behavior in the preferences, for instance to save captures automatically to disk instead. The editor looks quite messy on first launch, as icons are displayed on the left, top and right of the interface.
These icons have no titles, and it may take a while to understand what they do. The left and top icon bars are designed for image manipulation, the right bar for processing the image afterwards. All options that you could possibly want are available. You may add arrows or text to the screenshot, rotate or zoom it, blur or erase parts of it, or highlight parts. The processing options are equally extensive.
You may save the capture to the local system, cloud, or Facebook or Twitter, share it, print it, turn it into a PDF document, or send it to another application among other options. One feature that I’d like to see here is an option to customize what is displayed on the screen. If I don’t use a particular feature, I’d like an option to hide it from the editor to improve the accessibility of the features that I do use.
It is advised to go through the settings on first start to customize the program for your needs. Options that you find there include configuring the output format, name and directory, default action when a screenshot is captured, hotkeys, and capture specific preferences such as browser monitoring, and website URL recording.
The last option is a new feature of Ashampoo Snap The program may add the URL of the website that you captured using it to the screen capture. This can be interested for reference purposes, but is easily disabled in the settings if you don’t require that option.
Ashampoo Snap 10 is a powerful screen capture program for Windows. It supports all the features that you expect from a commercial program, and then some.
One interesting feature is for instance the ability to capture the desktop of multi-monitor systems simultaneously, or the ability to add URLs to the capture in various ways. An option to turn off the tutorial system would be nice as Snap 10 displays tutorial screens when you use a feature for the first time. These may be useful to inexperienced users, but if you have used a capture software before, you may not need them at all.
Is it worth the price? That depends entirely on your requirements. Free programs like Greenshot offer great functionality as well, but they are limited when it comes to some features such as recording video, editing images, or the capture methods that they support.
They never replied to my single question as a registered user. As for their other software, I usually find it overly aggressive. Lots of people call them spammers. I use their office suite and they send me notifications of service packs and notifications of deals on their other software.
Big discounts abound. One of the best things about Pic Pick is its graphic editor, which hits the right note between power and ease of use. Ashampoo Snap is probably one of the most powerful programs out there and edition 10 is probably quite similar to version 8 I use , however to mention just its drawbacks :.
I like my screen shot software to be unobtrusive. This one forces you to go into the graphic editor just to copy the screenshot to the clipboard — and the icon to do that is hidden in a completely non-obvious place with of course no immediate text label. Thanks for the info on this, Martin. I screen capture regularly but grew tired of Ashampoo software some years ago — spam, spam and more spam. Based on what previous commenters have said, I just downloaded the portable version of ShareX to compare it with my go-to program, FastStone Capture.
I just wasted 1 hour of my life trying to find a simple but powerful screen capture program and then I see your reply and your mention of FastStone Capture.

The latter is quite impressive, as it lets you annotate videos while you’re recording them, which cuts down on post-processing work.
